China’s four major A-share indices closed higher across the board on September 21, with the Shanghai Composite Index up 0.97%, the Shenzhen Component Index up 0.65%, the ChiNext Index up 0.8%, and the STAR Composite Index up 0.45%. Combined turnover on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges reached 2.03 trillion yuan (approximately $303 billion), down 45.6 billion yuan (approximately $6.8 billion) from the previous session, with more than 4,500 stocks advancing across the market.
On the sector front, real estate, shipping, banking, and coal rallied collectively in the afternoon, driving the indices further higher. ADC (antibody-drug conjugate) and CRO (contract research organization) concepts led gains throughout the day, while home appliances, gold, and highway sectors underperformed.
Pharmaceutical stocks posted notable gains, with Chinese drugmaker Huaren Pharmaceutical (300110.SZ) and Novoprotein Scientific (688137.SS) among multiple names hitting the daily limit-up. Most power stocks declined, with Diantou Hydropower and China Southern Power Grid Energy falling more than 1.5%.
In early trading, the three major indices opened higher and fluctuated at elevated levels, with the Shanghai Composite’s gains gradually widening while Shenzhen-listed shares saw their advance narrow at one point. Pharmaceutical and biotech, real estate, dining and tourism, and retail sectors led early gains. Optical communications, memory chips, agriculture, media, and petrochemical sectors were also active, while home appliances and semiconductor equipment sectors pulled back.
At the midday break, the Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.55% at 3,933.37 points; the Shenzhen Component Index was up 0.57% at 13,718.23 points; and the ChiNext Index was up 0.93% at 3,403.97 points. According to Wind data, a total of 4,357 stocks rose across the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges and the Beijing Stock Exchange, while 1,061 fell and 140 were flat. Morning turnover on the two exchanges reached 1.3279 trillion yuan (approximately $198.3 billion), with 119 stocks posting gains of more than 9% and 6 stocks falling more than 9%.
