Jackson workshops help families, seniors build financial knowledge

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson families and seniors got the opportunity to learn how they can strengthen their finances.

Impact Jackson 601 hosted two workshops Saturday to help attendees learn about topics like finance, credit and Social Security.

Community Bank led the first workshop, focused on financial literacy and credit.

“We are trying to get that financial literacy information out to the community because people, it can make a difference between you having an extra $1,200 coming into your household or $2,000 coming into your household,” said Sheila Bingham, GMB VITA site coordinator.

The second session covered Social Security, answering questions like when to retire and how that decision will impact their income.

“With the Social Security, people who are of age for retirement, they can make that decision for themselves. So if you want to wait till you’re 67, then you can wait until you’re 67, but somebody like me, I might want to go ahead and kind of tap into that at 62. And then that way I can pay off my mortgage, I can go ahead and get another car, I can do certain things, and that is income that I don’t have to be trying to figure out where it’s going to come from,” Bingham said.

Bingham said this knowledge can help families move toward financial freedom.
