This guest post from NSAC member, IATP, discusses USDA’s Harvest to Hallways initiative, which offers approximately $125 million for school nutrition, including kitchen equipment, Farm to School grants, local-procurement support, and research. However, this falls far short of replacing the $1 billion in Local Food for Schools funding canceled in 2025. Rather, sustained, large-scale federal investment in local food purchasing, kitchen infrastructure, school meal reimbursement, staffing, and universal free meals are needed so schools can reliably serve nutritious, locally sourced food.
