Another notable woman is joining the bookfluencer world. After coming in fifth place in California’s gubernatorial primary last month, former representative Katie Porter is stepping away from politics and opting instead to follow in the well-trodden steps of Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, and Jenna Bush Hager by getting into the book-recommendation game.
Last week, Porter revealed on her personal Instagram account that she’s turning the profile into a project called Katie Porter Turns the Page. “It’s partly a reference to a new chapter in my life, to change, but also to something I do a lot, which is turn the page when I’m reading,” Porter said. Trust your audience, babe — we got it!
Porter said she has always taken “a lot of solace and heart and joy” in reading, and promised her followers “book recommendations, book ideas, and author content.” I’m intrigued by “book ideas.” Sure, you can turn to Dua Lipa for interviews with the Booker Prize winners, but she’s not out here pitching ideas for novels. I bet Porter has an amazing idea for a book about a mother with a secret.
“I am closing the door on being a candidate,” Porter told the Sacramento Bee on Tuesday. “I cannot foresee that path back.” If Porter is serious about her new Bookstagram life, I wish her well and hope she gets a better microphone for her content. Once she does that, it’ll be game over for Kaia Gerber.
