Lawmakers Call For Pam Bondi’s Testimony About Epstein Files Despite Her

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is now weighing what happens next to its subpoena for former Attorney General Pam Bondi after President Donald Trump fired. Several lawmakers, however, are still demanding sworn testimony about her role in the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

In a statement, a committee spokesperson said, “Since Pam Bondi is no longer Attorney General, [Committee] Chairman [James] Comer will speak with Republican members and the Department of Justice about the status of the deposition subpoena and confer on next steps.”

Bondi was formally subpoenaed on March 17 by Chairman James Comer, who ordered her to sit for a deposition on April 14. In the committee’s cover letter, Comer said lawmakers were examining the possible mismanagement of the federal investigation into Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death, and the Justice Department’s compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The letter states that, as attorney general, Bondi had direct responsibility for the department’s collection, review, and release decisions related to those files.

The Oversight Committee approved the move after a vote that drew support from five Republicans, showing bipartisan frustration over how the department handled the long-promised document release. Lawmakers have complained about missed deadlines, sweeping redactions, and the failure to properly protect some sensitive information.

Several members, however, are arguing that Bondi’s job status is irrelevant. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat in the committee, said Bondi “remains legally obligated to appear before our Committee under oath.” Republican Rep. Nancy Mace also said the subpoena still stands because it was directed at Bondi by name, not merely at whoever happened to be serving as attorney general.

In a social media post responding to Bondi’s firing, Mace wrote, “Bondi handled the Epstein Files in a terrible manner and seriously undermined President Trump. She has stonewalled every effort to hold the guilty accountable. The American people deserve an Attorney General who is transparent and delivers real accountability. We look forward to a new Attorney General who is committed to getting justice for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein.”

When the subpoena was first issued, the Justice Department called it “completely unnecessary,” and Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche were expected to provide lawmakers with a private briefing instead. But that briefing did not resolve the standoff. House Democrats walked out of a previous closed-door session after…
