HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Henry County is considering changing the due dates for personal property and real estate taxes to help ease a burden off taxpayers.
Real estate taxes in Henry County are currently due October 1 with a grace period of 66 days. Personal property taxes are due December 5 with no grace period, making December 5 the last day to pay both taxes before getting a late fee.
Henry County Treasurer Scott Grindstaff recently recommended changing the dates to the Board of Supervisors so people will no longer have to make both payments around the same time.
“I’ve been looking at trying to change that and make it a permanent thing so they wouldn’t have to pay on the same date,” said Scott Grindstaff, Henry County Treasurer. “Plus, we could get it away from December with Christmas and all the other expenses people have.”
Grindstaff’s proposal is to keep real estate taxes due October 1 and shorten the grace period to 30 days, putting the delinquent date at November 1.
He also recommends adding a grace period of 15 days for personal property taxes which would make the delinquent date December 16. If taxes are not paid by the end of the grace period, he says the late fee is 10% of what is owed.
“I had a lot of people come in one day after December 5th and had to charge them the penalty because they had no grace period. So, I think this will be better for them,” added Grindstaff.
A public hearing will be held at the Henry County Administrative Building March 25.
If approved, the changes will go into effect this year.
