A nonprofit lender focused on expanding access to financial services has opened its first credit union branch in Reading.
Finanta announced the opening of its new financial center at 240 Penn Street on April 8. The location will offer both consumer and business services, along with financial education programs, in English and Spanish.
According to the organization, the Reading branch builds on its existing work as a nonprofit business loan fund serving low-income communities. The new credit union services expand its offerings beyond commercial lending to include personal banking products such as checking and savings accounts, as well as access to low-cost loans.
“Finanta exists to provide fair, affordable financial services to people who have too often been left out of financial institutions,” said CEO Daniel Betancourt. “By pairing Finanta Credit Union services with financial education and one-on-one support — in both Spanish and English — we build real relationships with our members and design solutions that help families build wealth and strengthen their communities.”
The Reading location will also serve as a hub for financial education, with workshops covering topics such as budgeting, understanding credit, obtaining loans, and purchasing a car or home. Programs will be offered in both English and Spanish.
Finanta officials said the branch is designed to be responsive to local needs, with services expected to evolve over time based on community feedback. The organization also plans to partner with local nonprofits, including Tech Centro, and financial service providers to expand resources available to residents.
The Reading branch follows previous Finanta credit union openings in Lancaster and Philadelphia, marking the organization’s continued expansion in southeastern Pennsylvania.
