SEOUL, Aug. 28 (Yonhap) — South Korea’s energy ministry on Thursday discussed the country’s plan to expand the use of renewable energy and foster related industries with the Climate Group, an international nonprofit organization that is leading the Renewable Energy 100 percent (RE100) initiative.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a virtual meeting with officials from the Climate Group and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) to exchange views on the Lee Jae Myung administration’s energy policies centered on promoting the transition to renewable energy, according to ministry officials.
In the meeting, the Climate Group and the GRA welcomed the Lee government’s plan to create RE100 industrial zones, build power grids and expand the use of renewable energy, the ministry said.
RE100, led by the Climate Group, refers to a global initiative that encourages companies to source 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy as part of efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.
South Korea plans to draft special legislation within this year to facilitate the establishment of RE100 industrial complexes, entirely powered by clean energy sources.
The ministry said it will review policy proposals by the two global organizations, such as accelerating the deployment of renewable energy and expanding wind power, noting that the government is working to streamline regulations to nurture the renewable energy industry.
