It was another month topped by $3 million deals for the local high-end home market in July, with a house near Wyndham edging out a recently renovated home near the University of Richmond.
Taking the top spot was 5713 Ardington Blvd., an 8,700-square-foot home in Henrico’s gated Henley neighborhood that sold July 10 for $3.06 million in an all-cash deal.
The six-bedroom, 5½-bathroom house was listed June 20 at $2.57 million and was put under contract the next day. Wythe Shockley with The Steele Group | Sotheby’s International Realty had the listing, which she said received multiple offers.
“It’s a retreat. Somewhere where you can really enjoy yourselves, enjoy the pool, enjoy the basement, enjoy your family, play pool, play basketball,” Shockley said. “It’s just incredible.”
Shockley listed the home for sellers Cary and Beverly Claiborne, who had the house built in 2017 and customized the design. Shockley said the custom-build took two years and was completed by Cory Atack’s Richard Atack Construction.
“She picked the best of the best. Everything was really top of the line, all the way through,” Shockley said. “From the surround sound, to the movie theater, to the waterfall in the pool – my features sheet is two pages long.”
Cary Claiborne is CEO of Adial Pharmaceuticals and of Prosperity Capital Management, an investment and advisory firm. Beverly Claiborne is an author and founder of Abide Products. Shockley said they are moving out of the area to be closer to family.
Property records list the buyers as Andrew and Maureen Birken. They were represented by Re/Max Commonwealth’s Janice Taylor, who said the couple requested privacy.
Taylor said the Birkens are relocating from within a half-mile of the house and spent several years looking for a move. She said they were drawn to the home for the size of its lot, its basement and pool, and its custom design.
“It was just one of those really special houses that checked every one of their boxes,” Taylor said. “I’ve been in real estate for a long time, and it’s probably one of the nicest listings and houses that I’ve ever sold. It was just appointed beautifully.”
The three-level house is on a 1-acre lot and has a two-story foyer with winding staircase, family room with coffered ceiling and gas fireplace, second-floor primary suite and a walkout basement with a kitchen, exercise room and seven-seat movie theater.
The property is assessed by the county at $2 million.
Just missing the top of the list was 201 Panorama Drive, which came in at No. 2 at $3 million. The 5,600-square-foot house across River Road from UR sold in an all-cash deal July 24, about a month after it was listed at $3.19 million.
