Shim Jong-min (photo), head of UBS’ Korea Global Banking Division, has been promoted to deputy CEO. Shim, who was born in 1981, is considered a next-generation leader who will lead the investment banking (IB) industry.
After graduating from Daewon Foreign Language High School with a business administration degree at New York University, Shim joined Macquarie Securities in 2007 and entered the IB industry. After that, he joined Credit Suisse (now UBS) in 2014 after working at Nomura Securities.
Even at a young age, Deputy CEO Shim has produced promising work results. His strength is that he has excellent communication skills with customers.
Deputy CEO Shim consulted most of the major deals that have shaken the domestic M&A market over the past two to three years. Thanks to this, UBS solidified its position as Korea’s leading M&A organizer.
According to Mail Business Radar M, UBS was active last year by consulting on the sale side of EcoBit (2.70 trillion won), Lotte Rental (1.5729 trillion won), Dongyang and ABL Life Insurance (1.55 trillion won), SK Rent-A-Car (820 billion won), and Asiana Airlines’ cargo division (470 billion won). Executive Director Shim spearheaded this and played a pivotal role in UBS’ position as the leader in the domestic IB industry.
Along with Deputy CEO Shim, UBS Director Lee Ji-hoon was also promoted to managing director. Lee, who was born in 1988, is considered one of the top 30 bankers to lead the investment banking industry along with Shim.
Lee graduated from Seoul Foreign Language High School and Hanyang University, joined Nomura in 2014 and entered the IB industry. Since then, he joined CS, the predecessor of UBS, in 2015 and is working. Lee has recently become the backbone of UBS, leading the sale of Ecobit, E&F waste, and Asiana’s cargo division.
