It hasn’t been the best quarter for Blue Bird Corporation (NASDAQ:BLBD) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 11% in that time. But that doesn’t detract from the splendid returns of the last year. During that period, the share price soared a full 146%. So some might not be surprised to see the price retrace some. More important, going forward, is how the business itself is going.

So let’s investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business’ progress.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company’s share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year Blue Bird grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.

When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements).

We think that the revenue growth of 20% could have some investors interested. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

A Different Perspective

We’re pleased to report that Blue Bird shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 146% over one year. That’s better than the annualised return of 19% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It’s always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Blue Bird better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we’ve identified 1 warning sign for Blue Bird that you should be aware of.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of companies we expect will grow earnings.
